YOU MAY BE 40 BUT YOUR HEART SAYS 90
Dear Friends
Can a diversity of fruits and vegetables in one’s diet reduce the risk of developing the number one killer in the world – CVD (Cardiovascular Disease). Can diet really help?
The UK Women’s Cohort Study analyzed the dietary habits of 30,458 women between the ages of 35-69. The women answered a 217 – item Food Frequency Questionnaire. The conclusion was that total fruit intake rather than intake of a specific type of fruit is more protective against CVD.
The woman who ate a greater variety of fruits, include berries such as blackberries, raspberries, black raspberries and blueberries, grapes, citrus fruit, pomegranates, strawberries and apples had less cardiovascular disease. These fruits are rich in polyphenols like flavanols, flavonols, anthocyanins, procyanidins, sterols, carotenoids, and hydroycinnamic acids (Lai et al., 2015) – the very phytonutrients needed to reduce inflammation in the body and to turn on the longevity genes (Serino & Salazar, 2019).
See Green Facts for more on the longevity genes.
