Beta Glucan: Gut, Brain, Mood, Energy
Let's start with Hasan et al. (2024) chapter on the health benefits and medicinal properties of oat beta glucan:
“Oats transcend their role as a staple grain; they represent an untapped wellspring of potential with profound implications for the fields of food science, medicine, and nutrition.”
This is a very exciting time in the Oat Beta Glucan world of science. The last few years have shown a growing research and great appreciation for more medicinal functions than thought of years ago.
We have discussed the powerful benefits of gluten free oat beta glucan for the gut, and if you need a refresher, check out the research of Shoukat & Sorrentino (2021) on the beta glucan as a prebiotic polysaccharide and its impact on the gut.
Due to the many properties of the oat beta glucan, scientists are finding that the gut - brain axis is enhanced with a regular addition of beta glucans, and its effect on cognition and brain health is impressive (Liu et al., 2023; Hu et al., 2022; Berding et al., 2021).
And there is more. This year research is showing that Beta Glucan from oats also boosts energy. If you have felt a certain fatigue in your body, Muroya et al. (2025) clinical findings are truly encouraging.
We will take a closer look at the research next week since it does not stop with brain, gut, and energy. There is evidence that beta glucans also help with reducing headaches, anxiety, and joint/limb pain (Wolver et al., 2021).
Enjoy!
Yours as always,
Dohrea
