Together, let’s put an end to deteriorating health

Blueberries's Role in Prevention and Reduction of Liver Fibrosis & Cirrhosis

We have discussed nonalcoholic fatty liver many times. The next stages are often liver fibrosis and then Cirrhosis.

Today I'd like to highlight two studies that examine liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, and some of the bioactive ingredients in food that have anti-fibrotic effect in the liver (Bae et al., 2018), and the connection between brain and liver (Kamimura et al., 2018).

Bae's group did a nice job explaining the progression into a nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and from there, into liver fibrosis and further into cirrhosis. This progression can also lead to cancer.

Two key components that develop fibrosis and cirrhosis are inflammation and oxidative stress. Foods that have the capacity to handle both causes are key in prevention and in supporting the liver to regenerate properly and healthily.

The list Bae et al. (2018) has is focused on such foods: Blueberries, astaxanthin, curcumin, silymarin, coffee, vitamin C, E, D, Resveratrol and quercetin (which blueberries have), and EGCG (from green tea). Article

Blueberries are shown to prevent and reduce liver fibrosis due to its intense antioxidant capacity.

Of course it is also anti-inflammatory and as we have shown often, regenerate our brain and nervous system, which plays an important part in the homeostasis of various organs, and in our case - the liver (Kamimura et al., 2018).

Check out both articles in the references, worthy of your time.
