Article: Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day

Did you know that the first Father's Day was celebrated here in Washington State on June 19th, 1910?

The first Father's Day was initiated by Sonora Smart Dodd and it took place at the YMCA in Spoken, Washington. Sonora's father was a Civil War veteran who raised six children.

Dodd actually established Father's Day as an official holiday in Washington State by campaigning for her idea! The holiday did not spread quickly though and in the 1930's Dodd efforts paid off on the national level although it still took till 1972 to declare Father's Day a national holiday in the US.
