Antioxidant rich diets are associated with reduced asthma prevalence in epidemiological studies.

Guilleminault et al. (2017) researched the impact of diet on asthma risk and asthma control.  The key question for clinicians is whether a mediterranean diet, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds could benefit patients with asthma.

The research team found that higher intakes of fruits and vegetables had a positive impact on asthma risk and asthma control.  Concurrently,  the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) concluded in their literature review that there is much evidence suggesting an increase in the net intake of fruits and vegetables as a way of reducing the risk of asthma, particularly in children where asthma is the number one childhood disease today.
