Broccoli as Immune Booster Against Covid-19
We have learned that the polyphenols in berries boost the immune system against Covid 19 in the new book (2021): Immunity Boosting Functional Foods to Combat COVID-19.
Today we will focus on broccoli as an immune booster against Covid-19 (Saha & Agrawal, 2021). What is in broccoli (and even more in broccoli sprouts) that is so powerful?
To start with - glucosinolates, sulforaphane, glucoraphanin, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and antimicrobial agents, to name a few phytonutrients!
Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Corona virus (COVID-19) outbreak as a pandemic which has resulted in the greatest health challenge crisis and international communal health emergency in January, 2020. It is stressing everyone lives due to the potential to create detrimental overall effects and leaving deep and enduring scars. To fight this unprecedented situation, proper hygiene, sanitation, physical distancing, and food safety are at the priority list. COVID-19 spreads mainly directly or indirectly by droplets produced by coughing or sneezing of a COVID-19 infected person. So the time demands to boost our immunity using super foods, herbs, and supplements, etc. to fight against this deadly situation. Broccoli, a member of the cruciferous family, is a nutrient-packed powerhouse that can boost our immune system. It is a tremendous source of phytochemical including glucosinolates, sulforaphane, glucoraphanin, S-methyl cysteine sulfoxide, isothiocyanates etc. Moreover, it contains vitamin like C, E and K and minerals like iron, zinc and selenium. It confers desirable health benefits by providing antioxidants, regulating enzyme, apoptosis and cell cycle and reducing the risk of diseases including Type-2 diabetes. This paper aims to bring out the efficacy of these bioactive compounds present in this functional food so that common people can incorporate this in their diet to boost their immunity. Though any single food cannot claim to immune our system but its potentially high nutrients are silver lining against COVID-19 and it also paves the way for future research in this direction. Glucosinolates & Sulforaphanes
Glucosinolates & Sulforaphanes
Broccoli sprouts grow into their peak when they are three days old, and can contain from 10-100 times more glucoraphanin (i.e., the glucosinolates of sulforaphane) than a mature broccoli plant!
Each of our vegan capsule has 500 mg of organic broccoli sprouts, harvested at the peak of their phytonutrient power.
