Together, let’s put an end to deteriorating health

Cranberry Power

Dear Friends

A powerhouse of a fruit—the American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon). Check the BioImmersion organic whole cranberries and extract in Clinical Notes!

Known for its ability to protect the urinary tract from colonization by pathogenic E. coli, it can also in a similar way help prevent stomach ulcers by blocking the adhesion of Helicobacter pylori, the causative bacteria involved in most gastric and duodenal ulcers.

But that is just the beginning of cranberry’s health benefits. Cranberries and cranberry constituents have been shown to possess antibacterial, antiviral, antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic, antitumorigenic, antiangiogenic and antioxidant activities.

And there is more.  Recent research on the effects of cranberries have focused on CVD.

It has antihypertensive properties:  Induces vasodilation (Maher et al, 2000), up-regulates eNOS (Kim et al, 2011) and inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme (Yung et al. 2012). This research shows that cranberries have properties that lower blood pressure.

It has antilipidemic effects:  It reduces plasma levels of oxidized LDL-C (Ruel et al. 2006; Lee et al, 2008) and it increased plasma levels of HDL-C in subjects with abdoinal obesity, decrease BMI and triglycerides and increase Apo A-1 (Ruel et al, 2006). This research shows that cranberries improve blood lipid profiles (lowers bad cholesterol and reduces triglycerides among other things).

Cranberries are a rich source of phenolic phytochemicals including phenolic acids (benzoic, hydroxycinnamic, and ellagic acids) and flavonoids (anthocyanins, flavonols and flavan-3-ols).

McKay et al reviews cranberry’s efficacy relative to heart disease in Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) and Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors, Nutrition Reviews, Vol 65, Issue 11, pages 490-502 Nov 2007.

The Last Quiz Answer:

At the beginning of the 20th century there were 500,000 rhinos across Africa and Asia.  This fell to 70,000 by 1970 and further to just 29,000 in the wild today. Despite this bleak picture, and the thanks to the persistent efforts of conservation programmes across Africa, black rhino numbers have risen since the early 1990s when they were down to just 2,300, where the current population is at 5,055.

“Across Africa, at least 20,000 elephants were killed [slaughtered] in 2013, the Convention on International Trade in endangered species of Wild Fauna and Flora reported last week.”  Also the Huff Post Green informed us today that Stato,  one of the largest living elephants in the world was killed [murdered] by poacher for his ivory. We have some very serious work to do!
