Summer Beauty: Skin Health
Summer is here and we do feel more exposed.
It is just a few days after the 4th of July holiday, and here in Seattle we consider that the beginning of summer, hoping for a sunny summer - and as all citizens of Seattle prefer it, not too hot and not too cold - so I thought to continue our exploration of skin health.
We want to feel good and look healthy.
Michalak (2022) has a fantastic Article that explores not only polyphenols but also herbs, essential oils, whole foods (in particular, plant foods), and their mechanism for healing and protecting the skin.
Take a look at some of the action of polyphenols: "Polyphenolic compounds, in addition to their anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, smoothing, soothing, anti-ageing, UV-protective, antibacterial, and capillary stabilizing properties, exert a strong antioxidant effect." That is uplifting!
And Michalak continue to discuss how these antioxidants eliminate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibiting or potentiating the action of numbers enzymes, while chelating pro-oxidative metal ions (like iron or copper), enhancing other antioxidants (such as vitamin E or vitamin C).
The list goes on, it is breath taking incredible how much plants can do for us, and herbs, and essential oils.
Pay attention to how much polyphenols are in your diet - and add some more!
