Together, let’s put an end to deteriorating health

Beta Glucan Synbiotic and Blood Sugar Levels

Dear Friends

Intelligently managing the sugar intake into our body is critical to achieving and maintaining our good health.  In our April 21st Forward Thinking we focused on the No. 4 Systemic Booster Metabolic Balance and its ability to help us manage the sugar content we find in our meals.

Today, we will discuss three scientific articles that highlight another of the Therapeutic Foods products which greatly influence sugars infusion into our body: the Beta Glucan Synbiotic Formula.

Oat beta-glucans have been widely studied for their health benefits, including their ability to reduce post-prandial glucose alone in a wide variety of food formats. (Wood P. Oat and Rye Beta Glucan: properties and function. Cereal Chem 2010;87:315-330).

The mechanisms of action is that the very high molecular-weight soluble beta glucan fibers exhibit high viscosities at low concetrations and when consumed with a meal they increase the viscosity of the meal bolus in the stomach which reduces mixing of the food with digestive enzymes and delays gastric emptying, thus retarding absorption of glucose. (Tosh SW. Review of human studies investigating the post-prandial blood glucose lowering ability of oat and barley food products. European Journal of Clincial Nutrition (2013);67:310-317).

Additionally, owing to its  solubility, beta glucan fiber is easily fermented by the gut microbiotia, which produces short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate.  Fermentation by-products (butyric acid) may affect post-prandial glucose at subsequent meals.  There is an inverse relationship to plasma butyrate and acetate concentrations. (Nilsson AC, et al. A cereal-based evening meal rich in indigestible carbohydrates increase plasma butyrate the next morning. J Nutr (2010);140:1932-1936).

In summary, the lactic acid bacteria (probiotics) utilized in the Beta Glucan Formula are superior fermenters of the soluble fibers.  Hence, these short-chain fatty acid metabolites are amply produced as a by-product of the fermentation process. Blood sugar levels are better managed. In addition, butyrate facillitates healthy cell turnover of the colonocytes which helps in the correction of leaky gut syndrome. For the gluten sensitive individual, the Beta Glucan Formaula has only .02% oat-gluten from the oat bran. Sincerely yours,

Seann Bardell

Clinical Notes:

The Beta Glucan Synbiotic Formula contains pedigreed probiotics and organic soluble and insoluble fibers, with 33 billion colony forming units per tablespoon of certified strains of probiotic (L. acidophilus, B. longum, L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, and S. thermophilus), and 5 grams of patented oat bran (75%) with high levels of beta glucan (10%), whole red beet root (15%) and inulin derived from organic chicory fiber (10%).

The recommended dose is 1 tablespoon per meal.

The Last Quiz Answer:

Zebras are generally slower than horses with a top speed of around 35 mph, but their great stamina helps them outpace predators.  When chased, a zebra will zigzag from side to side, making it more difficult for the predator to catch them.  When cornered, a zebra will rear up and kick or bite its attacker.

Zebra are extremely dependent on water and never wander far from waterholes, where they usually drink at least once a day.  It is the responsibility of an adult mare (often the oldest), to guide the family as they move from area to area and ensure that they never wander too far from the water.

Slowly but surely, the mainstream media is coming to the table and saying NO TO SUGARY FAST FOODS.

Produced and narrated by none other than Katie Couric, FED UP opens on May 9th. Commenters ranging from Bill Clinton and Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, to Michael Pollan and Mark Bittman help build the argument that the obesity crisis was brought on by greedy junk food companies, permissive federal legislation and subsidies, and a government that tells us that systemic weight gain is all our fault.
