Probiotics protect against stress

Dear Friends

BioImmersion’s Synbiotic Formulas directly support the management of our body’s stress response to life today.

It’s a jungle out there and life is increasingly stressful. Who doesn’t know and experience that.  It goes without saying, doesn’t it.

Hans Selye, the father of stress research, stated, in his book The Stress of Life, that “Microbes are around us [in in us] all the time yet cause no disease until we are exposed to stress.  What is the cause of the illness, the microbes or the stress?”

There are several things we know for sure, that stress today is more chronic and that chronic stress is a big problem physiologically for the body.  Chronic stress sets our bodies up for virtually all the chronic diseases and most of the acute disease of today because first and formost it causes the inhibition our immune system.

Let’s look at it from the standpoint of our intestinal tract, the Port of Entry for over 60 tons of food traversing the average person’s gut over a lifetime, and the staging point for the largest concentration of our body’s immune system cellular army- over 70%.  Let’s look at what stress does to the GI tract membrane.

The stress response is characterized by an increase production of adreneline and cortisol from the adrenal gland.  These steroid hormone prepare the body for the fight or flight actions necessary for life in the jungle or as the picture above captures life on the plains.

In a chronic state of stress the adrenals chronically put out too high levels of cortisol and as anyone who have been prescribed cortico-steroid drugs knows, this causes a risk to infections because they inhibit our immune system’s robust functioning.  So we get more infections, use more antibiotics, destroy more of the good flora, and put our bodies further at risk for pathogenic invasion.  We need and must have the help of good bugs in our gut microbiome.

Chronically high cortisol levels cause a thinning out of the mucus membrane of the gut- a very important protective fluid barrier against pathogens; it down-regulates the immune system’s production of secretory IgA- a critical immunoglobulin that binds and disables pathogens; it decreases a healthy GI tract cellular membrane turnover- manditory for maintain tight junctions and preventing pathogen invasion.

The list goes on but the point is that there is one very obvious reason GI tract disturbances now rate up there with heart disease for Emergency Room visits.  IBS, IBD, colon cancers and autoimmune disease are all on the rise, and that is chronic stress. They take their toll not only physically but pschologically as well.

The good new is that good probiotics can help reduce the effects of stress, and support the body’s defense against the development of these stress related diseases.

Messaoudi M. et al.  Assessment of psychotropic-like properties of a probiotic formulation (Lactobacillus helveticus ROO52 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175) in rats and human subjects.  Br J Nutr. 2011 Mar;105(5):755-64

In this study the researchers wanted to explore the emerging evidence that certain probiotics can reduce the anxiety and depression associated with GI tract disease.  Their results showed that a daily dose of the above formula alleviated psychological distress in volunteers.

Shiou S-R. et al. Synergistic Protection of Combined Probiotic Conditioned Media against Neonatal Necrotizing Enterocolitis-Like Intestinal Injury PLoS ONE 2013 Apr;8(5):e65108.

In this research Lactobacillus acidophilus (La), Bifidobacterium infantis (Bi) and lactobacillus plantarum (Lp) were used to prevent NEC, a life-threatening inflammatory bowel disorder primarily in premature infants.  Using a animal model they showed that this combination caused a decrease in intestinal production of the proinflammatory cytokine TNF-alpha, a downstream target of the NF-kB pathway.  It significalnty reduced intestinal injury incident from 43% to 20%.

Sincerely yours,

Seann Bardell

The Last Quiz Answer:

Hello there.  Have you ever looked eye to eye with a cheetah.  Me neither.  But I’ve petted one in a mall in Oregon.  What a beautiful animal it was, but its fur was definately not soft and silked but course and rough.  For cheetah lovers check out the delightful 2005 South African movie Duma— a story of a 12 year old who decides to return the cheetah he raised from a cub to the wild.

We do love TED talks!  Here’s an important TED event for us entitled, Changing the Way We Eat.  On Saturday, March 1st, you’ll have the chance to learn from some of the leading experts in food and nutrition.  All you have to do is log online.  It will be held in NYC, streamed around the country.
