Article: We Are All Mothers

We Are All Mothers

Many of my friends are mothers, and being a godmother to the most adorable, intelligent, and beautiful girl (yes, I am biased), I realize that mothering as a universal principle, is needed by every living thing.

We all need nurture to survive: humans, animals, microorganisms, insects, plants. Every living thing that requires energy to survive, that has the ability to reproduce, and has a function in living a life, needs a certain support to survive and thrive.

I water and talk to my plants, love to shower my friends with adoration, still think of my goddaughter as my darling little girl although she is graduating from law school, and at times, when I remember to be in the present moment, I am struck with the beauty of life around me.

It takes a certain amount of reflection and discipline to live in the present moment, where life is happening. We imagine nature as taking care of itself, but in fact, each living thing needs a very specific environment and conditions, including love, to live happily.

Today, I honor all women as the great nurturers of our world. And ask our men to get in touch with that nurturing feminine, yin, side of themselves. Because it is a different kind of power, and much needed in our world.

Yours as always
