Labor Day: Women Leaders in Every Field
I love that we celebrate a holiday that emphasizes workers who built and strengthened our country.
Today, let's celebrate our women friends who have worked with enduring patience to create better lives for others.
Without name-dropping, I am celebrating my women friends today. Talented workers in every field, fierce leaders who paved the way for other women in academia, music, arts, fashion, medicine, law, business, finance, and politics. They approached their work with creativity, intelligence, love, and dedication. I learn from them continually.
A few months before I completed my PhD, I lectured at the annual meeting of Peace & Justice Studies Association that took place in Selkirk college, British Columbia, Canada.
I was informed that a philosophy class would be joining us to listen to my lecture. As it turns out, they were studying Immanuel Kant, and heard I was presenting a part of a theory I was building that is Kantian in nature.
After the session was over, a young woman from the class approached me and ask how to forge a path in the complex fields of philosophy and politics. We chatted for a while, and my advice was to follow what she wanted to do, and not what others expected of her to do. I would have never built a theory that is global, Kantian and normative if I listened to several of my professors' advice. For them, it was too difficult, too 'wide' of a research to begin with, and worse, as many know, theories can disintegrate at the most unexpected times.
I was fortunate to have two strong and brilliant women professors who stood by me and told me to follow what I know is my calling. I was also fortunate to have a cohort that fully supported me.
The greatest lesson for me was not about finding my path, but becoming member of a supporting and intelligent collective.
Helming a nutraceutical company is no easy task, not many women work in the manufacturing/supplement field. I apply the lesson I have learned and work in partnerships with manufacturing, raw ingredient sourcing, scientists, doctors, and all that it takes to create exceedingly high quality supplement. It is not easy work. But I am surrounded by men and women, a collective, who are strong, supportive, and talented.
At the end of road - it is the unity of male and female that creates a new life, and it is the unity of all of us to create a great society.
