Blueberries (Freeze-Dried) and Immunity: Holiday Power
We have looked at the effect Blueberries have on diabetes and blood sugar regulation, but how about the Immune System?
This interesting study not only looked at the immune system but also at cardiovascular markers that we have examined in our past two studies!
And the researchers arrived to the same conclusion that I have arrived at: To lower cholesterol and improve other heart related markers, one has to remain on the blueberry intervention for longer time than 8 weeks (Rousseau et al., 2021).
Rousseau and his team wanted to know how would a daily blueberry supplement impact immune related pathways (and also metabolic syndrome). This is again a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Article).
What is fascinating and wonderful here is that the blueberry freeze-dried supplement affected the abundance of 35 metabolites and expression of 49 genes that belong to immune-related pathways.
Next for this group is to study how these genes and metabolites directly affect immunity and oxidative stress, the function of the metabolites.
Read and enjoy, and add blueberries to your diet!
suggested amount: 1 capsule of Blueberry Extract daily. One capsule is about 1 and 1/4 cups of blueberries.
