What If?

Dohrea Bardell
November 17th, 2008

What if every time you go out to eat you ask the waiter whether the restaurant offers any organic dishes?

What if every time you engage your waiter in a conversation about organic food, you also suggest bringing the owner to the table to discuss buying food from local sustainable farms?

What if you had the list of all the organic and sustainable farms in your local area and gave that list to the owner of the restaurant?

What if you do this every time you go out to eat anywhere, including (don’t worry… I will not tell) fast food restaurants?

What if you repeat this every time you travel outside your local area?

You could start a revolution.

You could save the life of our planet.

You could save our children’s future.

Would you please?

Progressive Revelation of the Bible: Gay Leadership in the Church

Dohrea Bardell
November 17th, 2008

The culture and mentality of the times affects all written documents including the Bible. Although many Christian, Jewish or Muslim religious groups have strong objections to viewing and accepting the biblical text as a cultural and historical document, it is a compelling issue that continues to demand examination and re-evaluation. Scientists, historians and biblical scholars have argued over the years about many subjects including the questions of creation or evolution, the age of the planet earth, civil rights for women, homosexuality, divorce, and even the contraception topic the Catholic Church has been embroiled in, has received much attention. These issues have a common thread: the differentiation of God’s voice from the voice of men and the culture of the times. The question therefore is how does the Church deal with the issue of homosexuality in leadership position in lieu of the hate and condemnation of the biblical text (Lev. 18:22, 20:13)? If the Bible is considered inerrant: is there hope for homosexuals to ever be a part of the leadership of the Church?

Septima Clark:The Strategic Method of the Citizenship Schools in the Nonviolence Movement for Civil Rights

Dohrea Bardell
October 23rd, 2008

Septima Clark was a woman ahead of her time. She was strong built and even stronger in spirit; not someone who gives up on a dream easily, even though it seems that all odds are against actualizing it into reality (Brown, 1990, p. 11). In researching the civil rights movement, Martin Luther King, Jr. and other leaders who have worked to end segregation and create a just society, Cynthia Strokes Brown came across the life and work of Septima Clark and realized her own life long dream of knowing the historical details and inner workings of the civil rights movement. Her book Ready from Within (1990) brings light to the hard and sacrificial work of Septima Clark; a dedicated woman whose work to organize the Citizenship Schools was fundamental to the strategic method the civil rights movement enacted to nonviolently fight for justice.

The Movement to Change The Food Production System: The Sustainable, Localized, and Organic Farming Solutions

Dohrea Bardell
October 22nd, 2008

The movement to change the existing food production system spans over many continents and is comprised of many organizations working on different aspects of the worldwide industry of food production: from farming and harvesting, to storage and distribution. There are many companies and organizations in between the food production chain that come along-side the big food manufacturing corporations and offer research and innovation, marketing and consumer psychology, agro-chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides, and drugs such as antibiotics and hormones. Most of the world owes its subsistence, sickness and starvation to this system. Ultimately it is in the hands of the “Global North” consumers to decide what and where to buy food and work more closely with the “Global North” and “Global South” farmers/producers/consumers to overcome the few big corporations who have monopolized and controlled the fate of food and therefore humanity in the last 40 years.

Life’s Symbiotic Network

Seann Bardell
October 22nd, 2008

What is life? It is a cell or groups of cells organized to survive to reproduce itself. Evolution is believed by scientists to be the process of going from the simple to the complex: life started fromsingle celled organisms and evolved to the development ofmulti-celled organisms, of plants and animal, from algae to kelp, from sponges to jelly fish, from fish to amphibians to reptiles to mammals- up the phylogenetic tree, complexity building upon complexity.
